Music Education for Singers 1&2
provide students with music theory
train students to sight sing in solfage
have accurate pitching
able to hear/dictate melodic lines/rhythmic patterns
have good sense of rhythm
Most of the churches have back-up vocals for their song services. However, in most cases, the singers do not sing in parts(except for one or two talented ones). They also do not pitch/keep time accurately. A majority do not read music or are illiterate in music. The role of the back-up singers is NOT ONLY to provide audio-visual encouragement (more people on stage so that the songleader won't feel pressured and more volume on the melody) but also musical harmony, musical statements and spontaneous improvisation to enhance the spiritual message brought forth.
Due to this lack, we have set out to teach this course. At the end of Music/ear training level 2, the student would be able to sight sing any church/contemporary music materials. Imagine having a group of singers who can sing from music scores without having to spend hours teaching them their parts! Only to have them forget the parts in a week's time! Or given any chord progression, they are able to harmonize the melody just by ear! Now that is what spontaneous singing is all about: Sing in any chord progression with clear spiritual and musical statements.
