Here it is. Finally a column dedicated to the unappreciated bass players. They are obviously the most endangered species in today's churches. There just isn't enough bass players to go around. So I'm beginning this beginner's guide to bass series, as a tribute to all budding bass players and a sign of gratitude to all those who have taught me throughout the years.

Let begin by attempting to describe the normal church bass player. He (never she) was the second/third best guitar player in the church. There wasn't any bass players then. No one else wanted to play the bass. He was also probably not strong in music theory. (Well, most church guitarist aren't).

Therefore, almost all bass players are cool, understanding, self-sacrificial, humble, and willing servants for Christ. What a guy ! But it's true, isn't it ? Therefore, I will attempt to help all budding bass players with monthly tips, and tricks, in this column. But mind you, these are bass tips according to me, and me alone, and not ‘Thus says the Lord'.

The bass player holds a key to a good band. As significant a role, as a guitarist or a keyboard/piano player or even a drummer may have. In fact, without the bass, there'll be no rhythm band.

Next tip, ‘Getting started as a serious bass player'.
